Continuing education

## Keep your license active

Verify renewal and continuing education rules for your Minnesota cosmetology credential.

Last reviewed July 29, 2026

### Check the current renewal rules

Check the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology renewal materials before every renewal period. Verify whether your exact credential has continuing education, reporting, timing, or other renewal conditions instead of assuming one rule applies across the field.

### Cosmetology licensing basics

License

**Cosmetologists must be licensed in every state.**Qualifications and the exact license title vary by state.

Education

**Candidates typically complete a state-approved cosmetology program.**Programs generally combine classroom study with hands-on training, and some states specify health and safety training.

Examination

**Graduates take a state licensing exam.**The process includes a written test and may include a practical skills test or oral exam.

### Prepare for a cosmetology license

1. 01

    #### Locate the state agency

Find the cosmetology license and issuing agency for Minnesota.

2. 02

    #### Choose an approved program

Confirm the school or program is accepted by that state and satisfies its required training before enrolling.

3. 03

    #### Complete examination and application

Verify the state’s written, practical, or oral testing format and submit the required application materials.

4. 04

    #### Maintain the credential

Check the renewal schedule and whether the state requires continuing education units.

### Reciprocity is state specific

Some states have reciprocity arrangements, but they do not create automatic nationwide practice authority. Contact the destination state’s licensing agency before relying on an existing license or training hours.
