### Federal tax preparer requirements

PTIN requirement

**A person paid to prepare, or assist with substantially all of, a federal tax return or refund claim generally must obtain a PTIN.**The IRS lists limited form- and activity-based exceptions, so preparers should review the current rule for their work.

Individual identifier

**A PTIN belongs to one person and cannot be shared by an office.**Each compensated preparer who meets the rule needs their own current PTIN.

Representation rights
