Last reviewedOctober 19, 2026 ### Steps to your first Louisiana cosmetology license 1\. Meet the entry requirements **At least 16, with the equivalent of a tenth-grade education** 2\. Enroll in an approved school **1,500 hours in a school approved by the board, over at least nine consecutive months**Some schools require more hours than the minimum. The board’s student FAQ says hours not completed within 6 years become invalid, and hours from another state’s school may transfer if earned in the previous 3 years and accepted by your Louisiana school. 3\. Take the exams through your school **The school requests your exam dates and receives your results**You take a national theory exam and the Louisiana state theory and practical exams. The practical requires a mannequin. 4\. Get your license **The cosmetologist license fee is $35**The board mails your first license to your school, not your home.
