# Alaska hairdresser license (cosmetology scope)

Alaska does not issue one credential named cosmetologist. Its broad hairdresser license is the closest entry route and is issued after 1,650 school hours or 2,000 apprentice hours plus proficiency and theory testing.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Alaska hairdresser license (cosmetology scope)

1. #### Education

Complete 1,650 hours in an approved school or 2,000 hours in a board-approved apprenticeship. Esthetician and manicurist credentials are separate and narrower.

2. #### Exam

For examination, complete the required practical operations and school or instructor proficiency assessment, then pass the written theory and any practical/proficiency examination scheduled through Prov. Waiver applicants must document an active out-of-state license and prior examinations.

3. #### Experience

No prior work experience is required on the examination route. Experience may support an examination waiver or endorsement when the board accepts the documentation.

4. #### Application

Submit the Board of Barbers and Hairdressers application, fee, training transcript or apprenticeship record, identification and examination or license verification; do not email documents containing sensitive identifiers.

**Good to know:** The board distinguishes hairdresser, esthetician, manicurist, hair braider and shop credentials; a salon or shop license is separate.
