# California CPA license

California is transitioning between a legacy 150-hour CPA path and a new education path beginning January 1, 2027. Neither passing the exam nor ordinary bookkeeping is itself a CPA license.

## 2 credential pathways

Each credential below has its own requirements. Pick the one that matches the work you plan to do.

### California CPA license under the legacy education path (available through the transition period).

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a bachelor's degree and 150 semester units, including 24 accounting, 24 business, 20 accounting study, and 10 ethics units under California's education requirements.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Uniform CPA Examination. California no longer requires a separate ethics examination for initial licensure; ethics education is part of the education requirement.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete at least one year of general accounting experience under an active, unrestricted CPA. An attest authority additionally requires 500 attest hours.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the California Board of Accountancy with official transcripts, exam credit, experience verification, fingerprints, and the Board's initial license forms.
    

**Good to know:** Candidates who qualify under the legacy rules remain in the transition framework through December 31, 2028, subject to the Board's current instructions.

### California CPA license under the new path effective January 1, 2027.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a bachelor's degree with at least 24 accounting units, 24 business units, and 3 ethics units under the new California requirements; the path does not require a universal 150-unit total.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Uniform CPA Examination; California's current initial-license FAQ states that no separate ethics examination is required.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete at least one year of general accounting experience under an active, unrestricted CPA; attest authority remains a separate 500-hour requirement.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    File the California Board initial license application after meeting the effective-date education, exam, and experience requirements, with official transcripts and experience verification.
    

**Good to know:** This new route begins January 1, 2027; confirm the Board's transition choice and forms for a 2027–2028 application.
