Barbers

# California barber license requirements

California licenses barbers through the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. The entry route requires age and school prerequisites, 1,000 hours or an approved apprenticeship, and the written licensing examination.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### California Barber license.

1. #### Education

Be at least 17 and have completed the 10th grade, then complete 1,000 hours at an approved barber school or an approved apprenticeship.

2. #### Exam

Pass the California Board written examination for barber licensure.

3. #### Experience

Apprentices work and train under the approved apprenticeship supervision. The school route has no separate post-school experience requirement for the initial license.

4. #### Application

Apply to the Board with the required school or apprenticeship record, identification, examination authorization and fees. California evaluates out-of-state training and practice separately.

**Good to know:** The Board's out-of-state guidance uses a three-month California equivalency example of 100 training hours; do not treat that as a universal substitute for the 1,000-hour entry route.
