# California cosmetologist license

California licenses a cosmetologist after 1,000 hours in an approved school or apprenticeship, age 17, completion of grade 10 or equivalent and a written examination.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### California cosmetologist license

1. #### Education

Complete a 1,000-hour approved cosmetology course or an approved apprenticeship. The Board separately licenses a hairstylist at 600 hours, esthetician at 600 hours and manicurist at 400 hours.

2. #### Exam

Candidates currently need to pass the written examination; California no longer requires a practical examination for the individual cosmetology license under the current board materials.

3. #### Experience

No prior experience is required for the school or apprenticeship route. Out-of-state applicants may qualify by equivalent practice or license review and may receive reciprocity without the California written examination when the statutory conditions are met.

4. #### Application

File the Board application, fee, school or apprenticeship proof, age and education information, identity and any conviction disclosure required under Business and Professions Code section 480.

**Good to know:** The 1,000-hour requirement and written-only examination reflect current California materials; specialty licenses and reciprocity have separate rules.
