# California real estate salesperson license

California's entry license is a salesperson license issued by the Department of Real Estate. California specifies college-level subjects instead of one fixed prelicense clock-hour total, followed by the DRE written examination and a broker affiliation for active practice.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Salesperson license; the applicant must be at least 18 and meet DRE identity, eligibility and legal-presence requirements before practicing under a licensed broker.

1. #### Education

Complete three college-level courses: Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice and one additional DRE-listed course. DRE describes the requirement by semester or quarter units rather than a single statewide clock-hour total.

2. #### Exam

Pass the California DRE salesperson written examination. The DRE combined examination/license application process requires the examination result and supporting education documentation.

3. #### Experience

No prior real estate experience is required for the salesperson license; a licensed real estate broker must employ or supervise the salesperson for licensed activity.

4. #### Application

Submit the DRE application, fees, official education evidence and identity information, and complete the required Live Scan fingerprint/background process. Active applicants must identify a responsible broker.

**Good to know:** The DRE pages list the approved additional-course subjects; check the current list because not every real estate course satisfies the third-course requirement.
