Cosmetology

# Colorado cosmetologist license

Colorado treats cosmetology as the broad license covering hair, esthetics and nails and requires 1,500 contact hours or 50 credit hours plus written and practical examinations.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Colorado cosmetologist license

1. #### Education

Complete at least 1,500 contact hours or 50 credit hours in a school approved under Colorado rules. The broad cosmetologist credential includes the scopes of hairstylist, esthetician and nail technician.

2. #### Exam

Apply for and pass the Colorado written and practical licensing examinations; the rules also require the applicable laws, rules and safety content.

3. #### Experience

No general prior experience is required for the Colorado school route. Colorado rules permit limited work-experience substitution for certain foreign training hours, but not for core sanitation and law content.

4. #### Application

Submit the DORA application and fee, education transcript, examination results, identity and any required legal or disciplinary disclosures.

**Good to know:** The 50-credit-hour option is the credit conversion of the 1,500-contact-hour standard; verify the current DORA exam vendor and application forms.
