# Connecticut CPA license

Connecticut separates the CPA certificate from active registration or licensure and has three education/experience routes effective October 1, 2025. Bookkeeping is not a CPA credential.

## 3 credential pathways

Each credential below has its own requirements. Pick the one that matches the work you plan to do.

### CPA certificate and active Connecticut license/registration for practice.

1.  #### Education
    
    For exam eligibility, complete 120 semester hours including 46 accounting/related hours and at least 24 accounting hours. For this route, hold a bachelor's degree with an accounting concentration including 27 accounting and 24 business hours.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination within the Connecticut 30-month period and complete the AICPA Professional Ethics self-study examination with at least 90%.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete two years of qualifying experience, not older than ten years, verified by a CPA licensed or practicing with privilege for at least three years.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection with official transcripts, NASBA exam records, ethics proof, experience verification, and the requested certificate/license or registration form.
    

**Good to know:** A certificate alone does not authorize all CPA practice; active registration or an active license is the operative status depending on the work performed.

### Connecticut route: bachelor's degree, 30 additional hours, and one year of experience.

1.  #### Education
    
    Hold a bachelor's degree plus 30 additional semester hours and the accounting concentration, including the Board's 27 accounting and 24 business subjects.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Uniform CPA Examination within 30 months and the AICPA ethics self-study exam with at least 90%.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete one year of qualifying experience, verified by a CPA with at least three years of licensure or practice privilege and within the Board's ten-year lookback.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    File the Connecticut initial certificate/license or registration application with official transcripts, exam, ethics, and experience records.
    

### Connecticut post-baccalaureate accounting route with one year of experience.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete post-baccalaureate accounting education meeting Connecticut's accounting concentration requirements.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Uniform CPA Examination within 30 months and the AICPA ethics self-study exam with at least 90%.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete one year of qualifying experience verified by a CPA with the required three years of licensure or practice privilege.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit official transcripts, NASBA exam records, ethics proof, experience verification, and the Connecticut application to DCP.
