# Connecticut behavior analyst licensing

Connecticut regulates behavior analysis through Connecticut Department of Public Health — Behavior Analyst Licensing Requirements. The state pathway is a legal license and is separate from the private BCBA certification. Use the current state materials to confirm the exact license level, scope, exemptions, renewal, and assistant or supervision rules.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## 3 credential pathways

Each credential below has its own requirements. Pick the one that matches the work you plan to do.

### State behavior analyst license through Connecticut Department of Public Health — Behavior Analyst Licensing Requirements; some states also issue an assistant behavior analyst credential with supervised scope.

1. #### Education

Complete the degree and behavior-analytic coursework accepted by the current state rule and the qualifying BACB pathway. Submit official transcripts or other education evidence required by Connecticut Department of Public Health — Behavior Analyst Licensing Requirements; a BCBA certificate is evidence for many state pathways but is not itself the state license.

2. #### Exam

Meet the state examination condition, which commonly incorporates current BACB BCBA or BCaBA certification and examination. The state board controls eligibility and may require a separate verification or examination step; confirm the current rule before scheduling.

3. #### Experience

Complete the supervised fieldwork or supervised experience required by the qualifying BACB route and the state rule. Follow the state scope, assistant supervision, renewal, continuing-education, and technician rules; do not assume a BCBA alone authorizes every role.

4. #### Application

Apply through Connecticut Department of Public Health — Behavior Analyst Licensing Requirements, submit the state application, education and certification verification, background-check materials, fees, and any other documents listed by the board, and wait for the license before practicing in a regulated behavior-analyst role.

**Good to know:** BCBA is a private national certification issued by BACB, not a substitute for the CT license. A BCBA may be required or recognized by this state, a payer, or an employer, but it does not by itself authorize independent practice in every state or setting.

### Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a private BACB paraprofessional certification. RBTs assist with behavior-analytic services under the close direction and supervision of an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator; RBT certification is not a state license or an independent-practice credential.

1. #### Education

For the 2026 BACB pathway, be at least 18 and have a high-school-level education or equivalent. Pass a criminal-background check and abuse-registry check completed no more than 180 days before paying the application. Complete the BACB 2026 40-hour training curriculum in no fewer than 5 and no more than 180 days; the provider may be an employer, university, or online program, but may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by the applicant.

2. #### Exam

After BACB approves the eligibility application, pass the RBT certification examination delivered through Pearson VUE. The June 2026 RBT Handbook describes the exam as 85 multiple-choice questions (75 scored and 10 unscored) in 90 minutes and based on the RBT Test Content Outline, 3rd edition.

3. #### Experience

After the 40-hour training, complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment effective January 1, 2026, no more than 90 days before the certification application. To remain active while practicing, receive supervision for at least 5% of behavior-analytic service hours each calendar month at each organization, with at least two face-to-face real-time contacts monthly (including permitted video contacts) and observation in at least one; at least one contact must be individual. RBT supervisors must be BCBA or BCaBA certificants and complete BACB supervisor training before supervising.

4. #### Application

Create a BACB Portal account and submit the RBT Certification Application with the attestation, 2026 40-hour training certificate, initial competency assessment, and background/abuse-check attestations. After an approved determination, schedule and pass the Pearson VUE exam. Maintain the applicable 2026 transition requirements: ongoing supervision, ethics, competency assessment, professional development, and recertification in the cycle shown in the BACB portal.

**Good to know:** For CT, this private BACB certification does not replace any state behavior-analyst, assistant, or related professional license, registration, or scope rule identified by the state sources. Confirm the state credential before providing services. An RBT may perform technician tasks determined by the supervisor, but may not represent RBT certification as BCBA, BCaBA, LBA, or another state license.

### Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) is an undergraduate-level private BACB certification. A BCaBA may provide behavior-analytic services only under BCBA supervision; a BCaBA may supervise RBTs only when the BACB and applicable state requirements permit it. BCaBA certification is not a state license.

1. #### Education

The June 2026 BCaBA Handbook provides two current routes. Pathway 1 requires a bachelor’s degree or higher from an ABAI-accredited program, with the degree earned while the program was accredited. Pathway 2 requires a qualifying bachelor’s degree in any field plus BACB coursework completed within 10 years, with a passing grade, through an institution with a Pathway 2 Program Contact: 225 total hours consisting of 30 ethics/code/professionalism (15 in freestanding courses), 45 philosophical underpinnings/concepts, 30 measurement/data/design, 45 behavior assessment, 60 behavior-change procedures/interventions, and 15 personnel supervision. The 2026 handbook notes a legacy VCS attestation may be used through December 31, 2026; check the current transition rules before applying.

2. #### Exam

Complete the BACB application and receive authorization, then pass the current BCaBA certification examination through Pearson VUE. The 2026 handbook identifies the BCaBA Test Content Outline, 6th edition, as the current examination resource. Passing BCaBA certification does not issue a state assistant-behavior-analyst license or other state credential.

3. #### Experience

Complete 1,300 hours of Supervised Fieldwork or 1,000 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork under a qualified BCBA supervisor; at least 40% of total supervised fieldwork must be unrestricted activities. Current fieldwork supervision is 5% or 10% per supervisory period depending on the fieldwork type, with the handbook’s contact, observation, individual-supervision, and documentation rules. After certification, a BCaBA must have a qualified supervisor on record: supervision is at least 5% of monthly service hours during the first 1,000 post-certification practice hours (at least 1 hour every 2 weeks), then at least 2% monthly, with at least one meeting in each service month. A BCaBA may not practice without BCBA supervision.

4. #### Application

Choose the current BACB pathway in the portal, submit the application and fee, have the institution send official transcript(s), submit the Pathway 2 coursework attestation when applicable and signed Final Fieldwork Verification Form(s), and resolve BACB review before scheduling Pearson VUE. After certification, keep the supervisor relationship, continuing education, ethics, and two-year recertification requirements current, then separately satisfy any state license, registration, payer, employer, or underlying-profession requirements.

**Good to know:** For CT, this private BACB certification does not replace any state behavior-analyst, assistant, or related professional license, registration, or scope rule identified by the state sources. Confirm the state credential before providing services. BACB certification does not bypass state practice law. In particular, a BCaBA is not an independent BCBA/LBA substitute and may not present the private certificate as a state license.
