# Connecticut construction contractor requirements

Home Improvement Contractor registration covers residential improvements; New Home Construction Contractor registration covers new homes. Commercial work and trades follow separate rules.

State and local requirements Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Register as HIC or New Home Construction Contractor; electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other occupational trades require separate credentials.

1. #### Education

Use the current applicant materials from Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection; any course, apprenticeship, continuing education, or classification education is scope-specific. Registration is not a universal course or general competency exam; review DCP contract, consumer, building-code, trade education, insurance, and business evidence requirements.

2. #### Exam

Complete the examination, registration, or qualification process described by Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. Registration is not a universal course or general competency exam; review DCP contract, consumer, building-code, trade education, insurance, and business evidence requirements.

3. #### Experience

Document the experience, qualifying person, bond, insurance, worker coverage, and financial evidence required for the selected scope. Registration is not a universal course or general competency exam; review DCP contract, consumer, building-code, trade education, insurance, and business evidence requirements.

4. #### Application

Apply through Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, select the scope, and obtain local permits and separate trade credentials before work.

**Good to know:** HIC concerns residential consumer work and does not authorize unlicensed electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or commercial work.
