# Florida barber license requirements

Florida separates full Barber and Restricted Barber credentials. Full licensure uses 900 hours (a school may certify exam eligibility after 600), a written exam with a 70% minimum, and an initial two-hour HIV/AIDS course; restricted barbering uses a separate 600-hour curriculum and laws-and-rules exam.

## 2 credential pathways

Each credential below has its own requirements. Pick the one that matches the work you plan to do.

### Florida Barber registration (full scope).

1.  #### Education
    
    Be at least 16 and complete 900 hours at an approved Florida barber school or program. The school may certify eligibility to sit after 600 actual school hours; if the applicant fails, the full 900-hour requirement applies before re-examination.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Apply for and pass the Florida Barber written examination through Pearson VUE. The August 2024 candidate bulletin describes 100 multiple-choice questions in three hours and a 70% minimum score; the content includes sanitation and laws, cutting and styling, chemical services, hair structure, shaving and shampooing.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    The initial school route has no separate post-school employment period. After the first examination, Florida permits supervised work in a licensed barbershop while the result or a timely second attempt is pending, subject to the statute and Board FAQ.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the DBPR BAR1 application and fee with school verification, an initial Board-approved HIV/AIDS course completed within the prior two years and lasting at least two hours, and examination documentation.
    

**Good to know:** This credential authorizes chemical services as well as the restricted barber services. A barbershop license is separate from the individual registration.

### Florida Restricted Barber registration.

1.  #### Education
    
    Be at least 16 and complete at least 600 hours in a qualifying restricted-barber course: Florida laws and rules (75), safety, sanitation and sterilization (325), hair structure, cutting and cleansing (150), and shaving, beard and mustache trimming (50).
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Florida Restricted Barber written examination through Pearson VUE. The August 2024 candidate bulletin specifies 30 questions on Florida barber laws and rules in one hour, with a 70% minimum score.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    The approved school route has no separate post-school experience requirement. The restricted credential permits cutting and styling, shampooing, blow-drying, tonics and sprays, shaving, beard and mustache trimming, scalp treatments and facials, but no chemical preparations or solutions.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the DBPR Restricted Barber BAR1 application and fee with the 600-hour school certification, the initial Board-approved two-hour HIV/AIDS course completed within the prior two years, and examination documentation.
    

**Good to know:** Restricted Barber cannot perform permanent waving, relaxing, coloring or other chemical services. Florida also has endorsement and out-of-state examination routes with different evidence requirements.
