# Florida cosmetology license

Florida requires a cosmetology license after 1,200 school hours, completion of the Florida HIV/AIDS course and a written examination; age 16 or a high-school diploma is required.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Florida cosmetology license

1. #### Education

Complete 1,200 hours in a Florida-licensed cosmetology school. Florida separately registers specialists for facial, nail and waxing services; those registrations do not authorize the full cosmetology scope.

2. #### Exam

Pass the written cosmetology examination administered through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The applicant may be admitted to the examination after the school certifies the applicable competency milestone, but the license requires the full education requirement.

3. #### Experience

Be at least 16 years old or hold a high-school diploma. No prior work experience is required for Florida education applicants; endorsement is available to qualifying active out-of-state licensees.

4. #### Application

Submit the DBPR application and fee, school completion proof, HIV/AIDS course certificate, examination result and identity information. The application asks for criminal-history and licensure disclosures when applicable.

**Good to know:** Facial specialist, nail specialist and body-wrapping registrations are narrower credentials; salon or specialty salon registration is separate from the individual license.
