# Hawaii beauty operator (cosmetologist) license

Hawaii calls the broad credential a Beauty Operator, cosmetologist category. It requires 1,800 school hours or 3,600 apprentice hours, age 16, education or qualifying experience, and written and practical testing.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Hawaii beauty operator (cosmetologist) license

1. #### Education

Complete 1,800 hours in an approved beauty school or 3,600 hours in a registered apprenticeship for the cosmetologist category. Hairdresser, esthetician and nail technician categories are narrower alternatives.

2. #### Exam

Pass the required theory and practical examinations administered for Hawaii beauty operators through the board testing process; the current application materials identify the board examination requirements.

3. #### Experience

Be at least 16. The applicant must meet the high-school or equivalent education standard or the qualifying experience alternative described by the board; no unrelated prior experience is needed after approved training.

4. #### Application

Apply to the Hawaii Board of Barbering and Cosmetology with fee, school or apprenticeship record, examination results, identity, age and education or experience evidence.

**Good to know:** Hawaii separates the beauty operator categories: cosmetologist is the broadest; hairdresser, esthetician and manicurist require their own category and hours.
