# Illinois barber license requirements

Illinois requires secondary education and either a 1,500-hour barber school program of at least nine months or a 3,000-hour apprenticeship, followed by the Board-designated examination.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Illinois Barber license.

1. #### Education

Be at least 16, have completed secondary education or its equivalent, and complete 1,500 hours at an approved school over at least nine months or 3,000 approved apprenticeship hours.

2. #### Exam

Pass the barber examination designated by the Department. The current IDFPR materials identify the written examination and language options; follow the current candidate bulletin for the administered parts.

3. #### Experience

Apprentices complete their hours under approved supervision. School graduates do not add a separate post-school work period for initial licensure.

4. #### Application

File the IDFPR application, fee, proof of age and education, school transcript or apprenticeship record and examination documentation.

**Good to know:** Use the current Illinois law and IDFPR examination bulletin because the Barber, Cosmetology, Esthetics and Nail Technology Act was updated in 2026. Shop registration is separate.
