# Louisiana cosmetologist license

Louisiana requires a nine-month, 1,500-hour basic cosmetology course, age 16, completion of tenth grade, and practical, Louisiana theory and national theory examinations.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Louisiana cosmetologist license

1. #### Education

Complete at least nine consecutive months and 1,500 hours in a board-registered cosmetology school. Esthetics and manicuring are separate programs with narrower scopes and hour requirements.

2. #### Exam

Pass the practical cosmetologist examination, Louisiana state theory examination and national theory examination administered under the Board’s testing process. The written exam may be scheduled after the board’s permitted training milestone, but licensure requires the full course.

3. #### Experience

Be at least 16 and have completed the tenth grade or equivalent. No prior work experience is required for the standard school route; reciprocity is available under separate board rules.

4. #### Application

File the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology application and fee with the school certification, exam documents, identity, age and education evidence and any required license or disciplinary disclosures.

**Good to know:** Louisiana’s registered cosmetologist credential is distinct from esthetician, manicurist and establishment credentials; confirm the Board’s current examination schedule.
