# Nebraska mental health counselor licensing requirements

Nebraska’s independent clinical counselor route is Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP), reached through the LMHP pathway and supervised clinical practice. This guide covers counselor licensure only; psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy routes are separate.

## Credential requirements

### Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP), with Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LMHP) and Provisional LMHP (PLMHP) stages.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a qualifying graduate counseling or related mental-health degree and the coursework required by Nebraska DHHS; the application asks for the program and transcript review.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    The national counselor examination is part of the LMHP/LIMHP application sequence; the clinical independent route is documented with the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE), while LMHP materials identify the NCE-level route.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Document the supervised practice required for the LMHP/LIMHP level, including 3,000 supervised hours and at least 1,500 hours of direct client contact in the counselor route; LIMHP also requires practice addressing major mental illness under the applicable plan.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply through Nebraska DHHS with the mental-health-practitioner application, official transcript, national-exam documentation, supervised-experience forms, background materials and fees; use the provisional/LMHP credential before independent LIMHP practice.
    

**Good to know:** Confirm the current level-specific exam and hour worksheet with DHHS before filing because Nebraska separates LMHP and LIMHP scopes. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examinations or state license.
