# Nevada mental health counselor licensing requirements

Nevada’s independent counselor credential is Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (CPC), reached after supervised CPC-Intern practice. The counselor route is distinct from psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses.

## Credential requirements

### Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (CPC); supervised entry is Counselor-in-Training/CPC-Intern.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a qualifying graduate mental-health counseling degree; the Board accepts CACREP or otherwise reviewed equivalent programs and requires transcript/coursework review.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) for the clinical counselor route.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    The Board’s current CPC materials require 3,000 supervised hours, including 1,500 direct client-contact hours and 300 hours of supervision. Nevada statute and Board materials have differed on the supervision total, so confirm the controlling worksheet before filing.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the CPC application to the Nevada Board with academic review, NCMHCE result, internship/supervision records, fingerprint background check and fees; obtain the intern authorization before counting Nevada supervised hours.
    

**Good to know:** The 300-hour supervision figure is the current Board-page figure reviewed here; reconcile it with the Board’s final application instructions because Nevada rules have changed. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examination or state license.
