# New Hampshire cosmetologist license

New Hampshire provides a school route of at least 1,200 hours or a supervised route of 3,000 hours over at least 18 months, with high-school equivalency, character review and examination.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### New Hampshire cosmetologist license

1. #### Education

Complete at least 1,200 hours at a Board-approved cosmetology school, or at least 3,000 hours over 18 months under a licensed cosmetologist. The statute and rules also distinguish barber, esthetician and manicurist licenses.

2. #### Exam

Pass the examination required by the Board of Barbering, Cosmetology and Esthetics. Confirm whether the current test appointment is written, practical or both under the active administrative rule and application packet.

3. #### Experience

Meet the high-school or equivalent education requirement and the Board’s character and fitness standards. The supervised route requires the licensed cosmetologist supervisor and documented hours.

4. #### Application

Submit the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification application, fee, school or apprentice hour records, examination documents, identity and criminal-history or character disclosures.

**Good to know:** Some older New Hampshire rule pages display 1,500 hours; the current statute reviewed states 1,200 school hours, so applicants should follow the active statute and OPLC packet.
