# New Hampshire mental health counselor licensing requirements

New Hampshire licenses the independent counselor as Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC), after supervised post-master practice. This guide addresses the counselor license only; psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate.

## Credential requirements

### Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC).

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a 60-semester-hour (or 90-quarter-hour) graduate counseling program with the required 33 credits across the Board’s specified content areas.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete 3,000 post-master supervised practice hours over at least two years, ordinarily 1,500 hours per year, with at least 100 hours of face-to-face individual supervision.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification with the CMHC application, transcript, NCMHCE score, supervised-experience verification, background materials and fees.
    

**Good to know:** CMHC is the counselor pathway described here. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examination or state license.
