# New Jersey mental health counselor licensing requirements

New Jersey’s independent counselor credential is Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), preceded by the Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) route. The counselor license is separate from psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses.

## Credential requirements

### Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC); the supervised entry credential is Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC).

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a 60-graduate-semester-hour counseling master’s program, including at least 45 credits across the required counseling content areas.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE) through the Board’s New Jersey application procedure.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete 4,500 supervised counseling hours through the LAC/LPC route; the Board materials describe at least two calendar years as an LAC and additional graduate counseling study requirements for the LPC.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the New Jersey Board of Licensed Professional Counselors with the LAC application, transcript, NCE documentation, supervision plan and verification, background check and fees before counting supervised practice.
    

**Good to know:** New Jersey’s LAC-to-LPC structure and older rule/application documents should be reconciled with the current Board checklist before filing. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examination or state license.
