# New Mexico cosmetologist license

New Mexico requires age 17, second-year high-school equivalency, a 1,600-hour approved cosmetology course and an approved examination.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### New Mexico cosmetologist license

1. #### Education

Complete at least 1,600 hours or equivalent credits in an approved cosmetology school. New Mexico separately licenses barber, hairstylist, esthetician, manicurist/pedicurist and electrologist practitioners.

2. #### Exam

Pass the approved New Mexico cosmetology examination. Reciprocity applicants may need the state practical and written examination and must pass the jurisprudence examination when the Board requires it.

3. #### Experience

Be at least 17 and have education equivalent to completion of the second year of high school. No prior professional experience is required for the standard school route; barber-to-cosmetology crossover has additional work and course requirements.

4. #### Application

Submit the RLD Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists application with official transcript, examination record, fee, identity, education proof and any reciprocity or discipline verification.

**Good to know:** The Board may require a practical and written exam when reciprocity does not show equivalent requirements; cosmetology is broader than the separate hairstylist or esthetician licenses.
