# New York CPA license

New York distinguishes exam eligibility from the CPA license and has a future education transition beginning August 1, 2027. Bookkeeping and non-CPA accounting are not CPA licensure.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### New York CPA license under the current initial-license route.

1. #### Education

Meet New York's current 150-semester-hour licensure education and specific accounting coursework requirements. A candidate may qualify to sit at the separate 120-hour exam threshold before licensure.

2. #### Exam

Pass all sections of the Uniform CPA Examination; New York's cited initial-license requirements do not identify a separate initial ethics examination.

3. #### Experience

Complete one year of full-time accounting experience, or the Board's part-time equivalent, under a U.S. licensed CPA or authorized public accountant as documented to NYSED.

4. #### Application

File Form 1 with NYSED and arrange official transcripts and experience verification through the forms required by the Office of the Professions.

**Good to know:** The New York education transition begins August 1, 2027; review Part 70 and NYSED's current instructions for an application after that date.
