# North Dakota barber license requirements

North Dakota's current administrative code states 1,550 school hours, while the Board FAQ and older statute materials state 1,500. The Board examination includes written and practical components.

## Credential requirements

### North Dakota barber license.

1.  #### Education
    
    For the ordinary school route, complete the approved barber-school course of at least 1,500 hours stated in current N.D.C.C. 43-04-24 and the Board FAQ. N.D.C.C. 43-04-32 separately allows examination eligibility after at least 1,100 hours of specified training, but the administrative examination rule still says 1,550 hours; obtain the Board's written current instruction before relying on the 1,100-hour minimum. Apprenticeship registration was repealed.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Board examination, which current N.D.C.C. 43-04-33 describes as a practical demonstration plus written and oral tests.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    The school route has no separate post-school employment period. Apprentice provisions were repealed or are not presented as a current entry route in the Board materials.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the Board application at least 15 days before the examination when required, with school proof, identity, examination paperwork and fees.
    

**Good to know:** Material source conflict: N.D.C.C. 43-04-24 and the current Board FAQ say 1,500 school hours; N.D. Admin. Code 14-03-01-01, whose PDF history shows an older rule effective January 1, 2011, says 1,550; N.D.C.C. 43-04-32 says 1,100 hours for examination eligibility. The Board should confirm which number it will enforce for a new applicant.
