# Ohio mental health counselor licensing requirements

Ohio’s independent clinical counselor credential is Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), after LPC practice and supervised clinical experience. This counselor route is separate from psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses.

## Credential requirements

### Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), preceded by Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a qualifying 60-semester-hour counseling master’s or doctoral program with the Board’s clinical counseling coursework.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Ohio Board materials require the NCE for the counselor license; the LPCC rule effective April 13, 2026 does not list a second national clinical exam, so applicants should follow the current Board transition instructions.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    After LPC licensure, complete two years of supervised clinical counseling experience at 1,500 hours per year, for 3,000 total hours, with at least half of the work face-to-face/direct clinical service and the Board’s evaluation.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board with the LPC-to-LPCC application, supervision verification, examination documentation, background check and fees.
    

**Good to know:** Ohio changed LPCC examination rules in 2026; verify the effective rule and current Board checklist for the filing date. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examination or state license.
