# Oklahoma barber license requirements

Oklahoma's Board rule book effective December 1, 2025 lists a 1,250-hour chemical Barber course, a 1,000-hour nonchemical Barber course and a 2,250-hour Barber apprenticeship; written and practical examinations require 75% on each portion. The public Board exam page and statute still display 1,500 hours, so enrollment and transition treatment must be confirmed with the Board.

## 2 credential pathways

Each credential below has its own requirements. Pick the one that matches the work you plan to do.

### Oklahoma chemical barber license.

1.  #### Education
    
    Under the Board rule book effective December 1, 2025, complete the 1,250-clock-hour chemical Barber curriculum or the 2,250-clock-hour Barber apprenticeship under direct supervision. The chemical curriculum includes chemical texture services and hair coloring/lightening as well as cutting, styling, shaving, sanitation and law.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass both the written and practical State Board examinations, with at least 75% on each portion under the current rule book. The Board public exam page still shows 1,500 hours, so confirm the applicable exam registration requirements before enrolling.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Apprentices train under the immediate or direct supervision of a licensed instructor in an approved establishment and must register before training. School graduates have no separate post-school work requirement.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the Oklahoma State Board with age and eighth-grade education evidence, school or apprentice records, the examination registration and fee, identification and any current portal documentation.
    

**Good to know:** This is a transition period: the current Board rules page links the December 1, 2025 rule book, while the public barber exam page and Title 59 still display 1,500 school hours; Title 59 section 199.8(E) also prints inconsistent parenthetical figures (3,000/2,250 and 1,500/1,250). Confirm the Board-approved track and any teach-out rule for the applicant's enrollment date. The nonchemical school route is separate and does not authorize chemical services.

### Oklahoma nonchemical barber license.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete the 1,000-clock-hour nonchemical Barber curriculum in an approved public or private school under the Board rule book effective December 1, 2025. The curriculum covers sanitation, science, cutting, styling, shaving and state law and excludes chemical services.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the written and practical State Board examinations with at least 75% on each portion under the current rule book. Confirm with the Board whether any transition rule applies to the school or examination registration.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    The approved school route has no separate post-school employment requirement. A nonchemical license does not authorize chemical texture, relaxing or coloring services.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the Board with the nonchemical school record, age and education evidence, examination registration and fee, identification and current portal documentation.
    

**Good to know:** The current rule book gives the 1,000-hour nonchemical curriculum but does not identify a separate nonchemical apprenticeship total; its apprenticeship rule labels 2,250 hours simply as Barber. Ask the Board before treating the 2,250-hour apprenticeship as nonchemical.
