# Oklahoma cosmetology license

Oklahoma’s current effective rules distinguish the Basic Cosmetologist training routes: 1,250 school hours for chemical-use cosmetology, 1,000 school hours for nonchemical cosmetology, or 2,250 approved apprenticeship hours. The Board’s exam page still displays a legacy 1,500-hour line, but the effective rule book and current Title 59 control the training standard.

## Credential requirements

### Oklahoma cosmetology license

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete the current Basic Cosmetologist curriculum: 1,250 clock hours in an approved private school for chemical-use cosmetology, 1,000 clock hours for the nonchemical course, or, for eligible public/high-school programs, 1,000 basic cosmetology hours plus 250 approved related-subject hours. An approved apprenticeship requires 2,250 hours.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Oklahoma written and practical examinations with at least 75%. Under the current statute and rules, eligibility requires the school or apprenticeship completion affidavit; a person must be at least 17 or be a high-school graduate to take the Board-issued examination.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    No prior professional experience is required after approved school training. The approved apprenticeship is the supervised alternative and requires 2,250 hours under the Board’s apprentice curriculum; student entry separately requires age 16 and at least eighth grade or equivalent.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering application, fee, the school or apprenticeship completion record, examination results, identity and any requested criminal-history or license-verification documents. A separate establishment license is required for the salon or shop.
    

**Good to know:** The effective Board rule book (December 1, 2025) and current Title 59 distinguish 1,250-hour chemical school training, 1,000-hour nonchemical training, and 2,250-hour apprenticeship training. The Board exam page’s 1,500-hour line is a legacy page inconsistency and should not be used as the current training requirement.
