# Oregon field-of-practice certificates (no umbrella cosmetology license)

Oregon does not issue one umbrella cosmetologist license. Applicants choose hair design, esthetics, nail technology or barbering and complete that field’s hours, practical operations and examinations.

## 4 credential pathways

Each credential below has its own requirements. Pick the one that matches the work you plan to do.

### Oregon hair design certificate

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete 1,110 hours and 455 practical operations in an Oregon-approved hair design program.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Oregon hair design field examination and the Oregon laws and rules examination; school practical documentation is required.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    No prior experience is required after the approved program.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply through the Oregon Health Licensing Office with official school transcripts, practical-operation record, examinations, fee and identity.
    

**Good to know:** Hair design is the broad hair-focused field; Oregon does not issue a single umbrella cosmetology license.

### Oregon esthetics certificate

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete 444 hours and 220 practical operations in an approved esthetics program.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Oregon esthetics field examination and Oregon laws and rules examination.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    No prior experience is required after the approved program.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply through the Oregon Health Licensing Office with transcript, practical record, examination results, fee and identity.
    

**Good to know:** Esthetics is limited to skin-care services and is separate from hair design and nail technology.

### Oregon nail technology certificate

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete 241 hours and 70 practical operations in an approved nail technology program.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Oregon nail technology field examination and Oregon laws and rules examination.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    No prior experience is required after the approved program.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply through the Oregon Health Licensing Office with transcript, practical record, examination results, fee and identity.
    

**Good to know:** Nail technology is a separate limited field; a salon or facility registration is also separate.

### Oregon barber certificate

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete 746 hours and 465 practical operations in an approved barbering program.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Oregon barbering field examination and Oregon laws and rules examination.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    No prior experience is required after the approved program.

**Good to know:** Barbering is separate from hair design, esthetics and nail technology in Oregon.
