# Pennsylvania barber license requirements

Pennsylvania permits a barber license by completing 1,250 hours in a licensed school or 1,250 training hours in a licensed shop, then passing theory and practical examinations.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Pennsylvania barber license.

1. #### Education

Be at least 16 and have completed eighth grade. Complete 1,250 hours in a licensed barber school over at least nine months or 1,250 approved training hours in a licensed shop.

2. #### Exam

Pass the Pennsylvania barber theory and practical examinations within the required eligibility period.

3. #### Experience

The licensed-shop training route is supervised training and is not ordinary post-school employment. The school route has no additional initial experience requirement.

4. #### Application

Apply in PALS with school transcript or shop-training affidavits, age and education proof, photograph and identification, examination results and fees.

**Good to know:** Pennsylvania's current barber guide distinguishes school and licensed-shop training. Reciprocity or endorsement is a separate review for an active out-of-state license.
