# Pennsylvania mental health counselor licensing requirements

Pennsylvania’s independent counselor credential is Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), based on graduate education, national examination and supervised clinical practice. The counselor license is distinct from psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses.

## Credential requirements

### Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a qualifying master’s or doctoral degree in counseling or a related field accepted by the Pennsylvania Board, with the required clinical content.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the National Counselor Examination (NCE); Pennsylvania also lists approved alternative national examinations in its current licensure snapshot.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    A master’s applicant documents 3,000 supervised clinical hours over two to six years; the Board’s snapshot describes a doctoral alternative with 2,400 hours, including 1,200 postdoctoral hours.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply through the Pennsylvania Department of State with transcripts, NCE or approved exam documentation, supervised-experience verification, child-abuse training, background materials and fees.
    

**Good to know:** Pennsylvania’s Board snapshot should control the current exam alternatives and education equivalency review. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examination or state license.
