# Rhode Island barber license requirements

Rhode Island recognizes three entry routes for a barber license: 1,500 continuous school hours, a registered apprenticeship held for at least two years, or the current combination of 1,000 school hours plus 840 supervised on-the-job hours over at least six months. All routes require written and practical examinations with a 70% minimum.

## 3 credential pathways

Each credential below has its own requirements. Pick the one that matches the work you plan to do.

### Rhode Island barber license — school route.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete at least 1,500 hours of continuous study and practice in barbering at an approved school, as required by R.I. Gen. Laws section 5-10-9(5)(i).
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Department-approved written and practical barber examinations. The active regulation sets a 70% minimum passing score for each written and practical examination.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    The school route has no separate post-school work requirement for the initial license.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the Department of Health application, official school transcript sent directly by the school, high-school or equivalent evidence, birth or lawful-entry documents, examination records and fee.
    

**Good to know:** Rhode Island statute also allows the registered-apprenticeship and combination routes below; choose the route that matches the records the school or supervisor can certify.

### Rhode Island barber license — full apprenticeship route.

1.  #### Education
    
    Hold a registered apprentice-barber certificate in full force for at least two years before applying, and provide employer affidavits or other satisfactory evidence that you actually practiced barbering as an apprentice during those two years.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Department-approved written and practical barber examinations with at least 70% on each portion under the active regulation.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Train under the direct supervision of a licensed barber who is on the premises; one licensed barber may supervise no more than one apprentice in a public hair-design shop.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the Department of Health application and fee with the registered apprentice certificate, employer affidavits, high-school or equivalent evidence, identification or lawful-entry documents and examination records.
    

**Good to know:** The two-year apprenticeship route is the direct statutory route in section 5-10-9(5)(ii); the active regulation separately details the six-month combination route.

### Rhode Island barber license — school and work-study combination route.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete 1,000 hours of barber instruction in an approved school plus at least 840 hours of barber on-the-job training as a registered apprentice, obtained over a minimum of six months.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Department-approved written and practical barber examinations with a minimum 70% score on each portion.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    The 840 hours are supervised entry training, not optional post-license experience. The apprentice must work under a licensed barber who is on the premises, with no more than one apprentice per supervising barber in a public shop.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the Department application and fee with the school transcript sent directly by the school, registered apprentice and on-the-job records, high-school or equivalent evidence, identification or lawful-entry documents and examination records.
    

**Good to know:** This combination route is expressly stated in active rule 216-RICR-40-05-4 section 4.4.3(D)(1)(a), while the statute leaves the combination details to regulation.
