# South Carolina mental health counselor licensing requirements

South Carolina’s independent counselor credential is Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), preceded by LPC Associate supervised practice. This counselor route is separate from psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licensure.

## Credential requirements

### Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC); supervised entry is LPC Associate.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a CACREP counseling degree or a qualifying 60-semester-hour graduate counseling program reviewed by the Board.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the NCE or NCMHCE as accepted for the applicable counselor credential.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete 1,500 post-master supervised hours over at least two years, including 1,380 direct counseling hours and 120 hours of supervision under the current Board guidance; confirm the individual/triadic allocation on the current plan.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply online to the South Carolina Board with transcript, exam result, LPC Associate application, supervision plan and reports, background check and fees before accruing independent-practice hours.
    

**Good to know:** Current Board pages and older supervision-plan forms show different supervision splits; use the current Board checklist for the filing date. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examination or state license.
