# South Dakota barber license requirements

South Dakota requires 1,500 hours in an approved barber school and both NIC written theory and South Dakota practical examinations for an individual barber license.

## Credential requirements

### South Dakota barber license.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete the approved 1,500-hour barber school curriculum. The current Board licensing page does not list a standard entry apprenticeship route.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the NIC written theory examination and South Dakota Board practical examination with the required passing score.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    The school route has no separate post-school initial work period. For reciprocity, the Board may use documented licensed work at 50 hours per month to fill an education deficit.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Submit the Board application, school transcript, examination results, identification, photograph and fee; use the reciprocity form for an active out-of-state license.
    

**Good to know:** A barber school or shop authorization is separate from the individual license. Confirm reciprocity credit with the Board before relying on work hours.
