Barbers

# Utah barber license requirements

Utah's 2026 code separates a full Master Barbering license, which includes chemical hair services, from a narrower Barbering permit for nonchemical barber services. The Master Barbering route requires 1,000 school or apprenticeship hours; the Barbering permit requires 130 school or apprenticeship hours, followed by the Division examination.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## 2 credential pathways

Each credential below has its own requirements. Pick the one that matches the work you plan to do.

### Utah Master Barbering license (full scope).

1. #### Education

Complete at least 1,000 hours at a licensed or recognized school covering hair safety, haircutting and barbering, and chemical hair services, or complete an approved master-barber apprenticeship of at least 1,000 hours.

2. #### Exam

Apply with the required service counts and pass the examination required by the Division. The current DOPL FAQ says Utah accepts NIC theory and practical examinations for the classification with at least 70%; use the current barber bulletin when scheduling.

3. #### Experience

An apprentice must register before training, receive one-on-one direct supervision from a licensed instructor, have no more than two apprentices per supervisor and complete the program within two years. The school route has no separate post-school work requirement.

4. #### Application

Apply through DOPL MyLicenseOne with the approved school or apprenticeship verification, service-count documentation, examination result, identity information and fee.

**Good to know:** The Master Barbering license includes cutting, shaving, styling and chemical services such as waving, bleaching, tinting, coloring and relaxing. New applicants should use this 2026 classification rather than the legacy barbering license.

### Utah Barbering permit (nonchemical barber scope).

1. #### Education

Complete at least 130 hours at a licensed or recognized school covering hair safety and barbering, or complete an approved barbering-permit apprenticeship of at least 130 hours. The statutory barbering scope includes cutting, draping, shampooing, scalp treatments, basic wet styling, blow-drying, wigs and face or neck shaving.

2. #### Exam

Submit the permit application and pass the examination required by the Division for the barbering-permit classification. DOPL currently states that NIC theory and practical examinations are accepted for classifications at a 70% minimum; confirm the current permit bulletin with DOPL before scheduling.

3. #### Experience

An apprenticeship applicant must register before training, receive one-on-one direct supervision from a licensed instructor, have no more than two apprentices per supervisor and finish within two years. The school route has no separate post-school work requirement.

4. #### Application

Apply through MyLicenseOne with school or apprenticeship verification, service-count documentation, the required permit-exam result, identity information and fee.

**Good to know:** The Barbering permit does not include permanent waving, bleaching, tinting, coloring, relaxing or other chemical hair services. Those services require the Master Barbering license or the applicable chemical hair-services permit.
