# Utah construction contractor requirements

DOPL licenses B100 general building, R100 residential/small commercial, E100 engineering, and specialty contractors.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Choose B100, R100, E100, or specialty; electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and similar scopes are separate except limited residential exceptions.

1.  #### Education
    
    Use the current applicant materials from Utah Division of Professional and Occupational Licensing; any course, apprenticeship, continuing education, or classification education is scope-specific. Complete approved 25-hour prelicense course where current application requires it; pass business-and-law and trade exams; general route documents two years and 4,000 paid hours and qualifier. April 2026 guidance lists $1 million occurrence/$2 million aggregate insurance.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Complete the examination, registration, or qualification process described by Utah Division of Professional and Occupational Licensing. Complete approved 25-hour prelicense course where current application requires it; pass business-and-law and trade exams; general route documents two years and 4,000 paid hours and qualifier. April 2026 guidance lists $1 million occurrence/$2 million aggregate insurance.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Document the experience, qualifying person, bond, insurance, worker coverage, and financial evidence required for the selected scope. Complete approved 25-hour prelicense course where current application requires it; pass business-and-law and trade exams; general route documents two years and 4,000 paid hours and qualifier. April 2026 guidance lists $1 million occurrence/$2 million aggregate insurance.

    Apply through Utah Division of Professional and Occupational Licensing, select the scope, and obtain local permits and separate trade credentials before work.
