# Virginia real estate salesperson license

Virginia requires a salesperson applicant to be at least 18 with a high-school diploma or GED, complete 60 hours of Principles of Real Estate, pass both examination portions and activate through a licensed firm; new active salespersons then complete 30 hours of post-license education.

## Credential requirements

### Salesperson license; applicant must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or GED and activate with a Virginia licensed firm or sole proprietor for active practice.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete 60 class/clock hours of a Virginia Board-approved Principles of Real Estate course.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the Virginia and national portions of the salesperson examination through PSI. Examination scores are valid for one year for the initial application.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    No prior experience is required for a salesperson; Virginia's broker route requires 36 of the preceding 48 months actively engaged plus 180 broker education hours.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Pass the exam, submit the paper salesperson application and current fee within one year of the initial exam, provide Social Security number or Virginia DMV control number, education proof and the firm activation information; answer the Board's character questions and follow any current fingerprint instructions.
    

**Good to know:** New active Virginia salespersons must complete a 30-hour Board-approved post-license curriculum within one year; it is separate from the 60-hour prelicense course.
