# District of Columbia mental health counselor licensing requirements

The District of Columbia’s independent counselor credential is Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), after the LGPC supervised stage. This guide covers the counselor license only; psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate.

## Credential requirements

### Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC); supervised entry is Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC).

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete the qualifying counseling master’s degree, generally at least 60 graduate semester hours, subject to the Board’s transcript and curriculum review.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the national counselor examination adopted by the District Board; confirm the current examination name and registration instructions in the application package.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Document 3,500 supervised counseling hours over two to five years under the DCMR pathway, with 200 hours of immediate supervision, including the required allocation with an LPC and other qualified supervisors.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the DC Health Board of Professional Counseling with LGPC/LPC applications, transcript, national-exam documentation, supervision records, background materials and fees.
    

**Good to know:** The DC statute states a two-year supervised period while DCMR details 3,500 hours over two to five years; reconcile the statute, rules and current application package before filing. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examination or license.
