# West Virginia barber license requirements

West Virginia allows 1,200 clock hours for nonchemical barbering, 1,500 for chemical barbering or a new 2,400-hour apprenticeship completed within 30 months, followed by the Board examination.

## Credential requirements

### West Virginia barber license.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete 1,200 clock hours of nonchemical barber training or 1,500 hours including chemical services at a Board-approved school. The barber-apprenticeship rule effective April 27, 2026 also permits a 2,400-hour apprenticeship completed within 30 months.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Apply for and pass the Board's NIC-sponsored third-party examination. The Board's current fee rule identifies National Written and National Practical components; use the current testing bulletin for the selected scope and any chemical-service component.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Apprentices work under direct supervision of an approved provider, complete at least 150 mannequin hours before live services, pass chapter reviews at 70% or higher and keep the Board records; the program must finish within 30 months. School graduates have no separate post-school period.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Meet the age 18, high-school/GED or ability-to-benefit, health-certificate and work-eligibility requirements for the license, then submit the Board application with school or apprenticeship records, exam results, identification and fees.
    

**Good to know:** The 2,400-hour apprenticeship rule is a 2026 change. Confirm transition treatment and whether the selected school curriculum is chemical or nonchemical before enrollment; the Board public licensing page currently lists 1,200 school hours for barbering.
