# Wisconsin cosmetologist license

Wisconsin requires high school or equivalent (or age 18), 1,550 school hours over at least 10 months or a statutory apprenticeship, and written and practical examinations.

Statewide license Reviewed October 2, 2026

## Credential requirements

### Wisconsin cosmetologist license

1. #### Education

Complete at least 1,550 training hours over at least 10 months in an approved cosmetology school, or complete the Wisconsin cosmetology apprenticeship with 288 theory hours and 3,712 practical hours.

2. #### Exam

Apply for and pass both the current Wisconsin written and practical state board examinations through the Department’s contracted vendor.

3. #### Experience

Graduate from high school, hold a HSED/GED, be in a Board-approved program or be at least 18. No prior professional experience is required after school; endorsement applicants complete a one-hour Wisconsin laws course.

4. #### Application

Apply through Wisconsin DSPS LicensE with third-party school or apprenticeship documents, examination results, fee, identity and any convictions form or license verification required.

**Good to know:** The school and apprenticeship hour totals are different measures; do not substitute the 3,712 practical apprentice hours for the 1,550-school route without the DSPS pathway documentation.
