# Wyoming mental health counselor licensing requirements

Wyoming’s independent counselor credential is Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), reached after the Provisional Professional Counselor supervised stage. The counselor route is distinct from psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses.

## Credential requirements

### Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC); supervised entry is Provisional Professional Counselor.

1.  #### Education
    
    Complete a 60-semester-hour CACREP or equivalent professional counseling master’s/doctoral program accepted by the Board.
    
2.  #### Exam
    
    Pass the NCE, NCMHCE or CRCE accepted by the Wyoming Board.
    
3.  #### Experience
    
    Complete 3,000 post-degree supervised hours over 18 to 36 months, including 1,200 direct client-contact hours and 100 hours of supervision.
    
4.  #### Application
    
    Apply to the Wyoming Mental Health Professions Licensing Board with provisional and LPC applications, transcript, exam result, supervision verification, background materials and fees.
    

**Good to know:** Wyoming requires the provisional supervised stage before independent LPC practice. Psychology, clinical social work and marriage-and-family-therapy licenses are separate regulated professions; a short pre-licensure course cannot replace the graduate degree, supervised practice, examination or state license.
