### License requirements by line of authority

This guide covers initial resident individual insurance producer licensing for Life and Accident & Health (A&H) and Property & Casualty (P&C) in Wisconsin. The selected line of authority determines the education, exam, fingerprint, application, and appointment steps; it is not a guide to nonresident licenses, renewals, agencies, adjusters, or brokers.

#### Resident insurance producer — Life and Accident & Health

1.  ##### Education
    
    Complete at least 20 hours of approved prelicensing education for Life or Accident & Health before the exam. Eight hours cover common Wisconsin law, ethics, and insurance principles and need not be repeated for another line within 12 months; 12 hours are line-specific.
    
2.  ##### Exam
    
    After completing the required education, unless a documented waiver applies, pass the state examination for each requested major line of authority. Follow the state exam provider and NIPR or department instructions for scheduling and score validity.

    No general prior employment requirement is listed for the standard resident individual producer route in the cited state requirements. A professional designation, degree, or recent out-of-state license can change education or exam eligibility; those are exceptions, not a blanket experience prerequisite.

### Wisconsin requires 20 hours of prelicensing education for each line of authority.

To earn your certificate of completion:

-   Read every chapter and take the end-of-chapter quiz scoring 70% or better before progressing to the next chapter.
-   All chapters and quizzes must be completed in order and before the Certificate Exam may be accessed.
-   Spend a minimum of 20 hours studying per line of authority.
-   Complete and pass the Certificate Exam with a score of 70% or better with a proctor/disinterested third party present. The Certificate Exam must be proctored by an "impartial disinterested third party or currently licensed agent with no financial or family relationship to the candidate". The proctor must be physically present, supervise the duration of the exam, and follow all state proctoring rules.

Your exam will be based on the Wisconsin exam outline, which can be found in PSI's Candidate Bulletin. Attention: Individuals being licensed for the first time must select both the general and state series labeled exams for the line of authority they wish to obtain. Exams labeled as state specific series tests are ONLY for individuals who were previously licensed with the same line of authority.
